Amman
30 kilometers from the capital city Amman. Madaba is a combination of rural home life and a hot spot for religious tourism. Known as the “City of Mosaics”, Madaba is the cultural epicenter for mosaics. And also well known for tens of old and new churches, and archeological complexes.
There are many places worth seeing in Madaba:
St. George’s Church
or the church of the map from the 6th century with magnificent mosaic floor showing a map of the holy land and Egypt
St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic church
A beautiful church, well preserved, a good place to get a bird view of the city, or go underground to see the old well and the history of the city.
Church of the Apostles
The church is famous for twelve apostles figures inscribed on the walls of the church.
Madaba museum
A pleasant museum consists of several buildings, and every part is dedicated to a different period or different kind of art
Madaba Archaeological Park
In the heart of Madaba was initiated in 1991. The park includes a well-preserved stretch of late Roman Street and buildings dating from the Roman period into the early part of this century. The park serves to highlight Madaba’s ancient past. The park contains a number of Jordan’s most important mosaics.
Madaba Archaeological Museum
It was established in 1979 within a group of ancient houses where many mosaic floors were discovered. The museum is made of two parts:
Madaba Archaeological Museum where acquisitions are exhibited inside according to the archaeological site in Madaba Governorate and surrounding urban regions in chronological order. It includes a collection of artefacts such as pottery, coins, and mosaic panels.
Madaba Folklore Museum It was established to preserve the local heritage of Madaba and surrounding villages. It includes a collection of jewelry and traditional costumes that tell the story of Madaba heritage through different ages and symbolize the richness of local heritage.
